Marmont Snares SuperX Red Plate at Maitland
CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Jay Marmont has taken control of the points’ race in the premier Pro Open division after taking second place at round four of the Super X Championship held at Maitland over the weekend.

Despite threatening skies, the weather stayed clear and the track fast, as the determined Yamaha rider set out to close the gap in the championship chase as racing got under way. Marmont entered the round two points behind the leader and knew that he had to make his move at the penultimate round in Maitland if is to be crowned the 2011 champion.

The day presented some early challenges to Marmont as he tangled with another rider in his heat race and was left with ninth pick of the gate for the all important charge into turn one for the first of the three race, triple challenge format.

That late start gate selection came back to haunt him in moto one when he was stuck mid pack entering the first turn and was involved in the dirt after a multi rider pile-up and plenty of work to do. In the 10 lap race he charged his way back to eighth place and knew that he had to produce the goods in the final two races to have any chance of not only salvaging his night, but also the championship.

But when his back is against the wall, Marmont often produces his best and that’s exactly what he did. He leapt from the gate in moto two, quickly took control of the race and sped off to a race victory. Race three saw him slot into second place in the early running before making the pass for the lead at the halfway stage and again clearing off to a well earned victory.

His 8-1-1 scores gave him second on the night but as his main rivals had issues of their own, he elevated himself to the top of the leader board, five points clear of his nearest rival with one round remaining.

“It wasn’t an easy day for me but to come out with the points lead and a five point gap over second is awesome,” Marmont said.

“The starts on this track were important so that crash in the heat race made it tough for me as we had to use the same starting gate in all three races and I wasn’t able to pick my preferred gate. Then to fall in moto one just added to my problems and I had to put my head down and pass as many riders as I could in such a short race.”

“Things went a lot better in the last two and I was able to climb back to second for the night, so it was good to salvage a respectable result on a tough night.”

“But the points lead doesn’t change anything. My goal is still to win the final round and race at my best. I will put in another hard week on the training track because this championship isn’t over,” Marmont finishes.

After the four rounds contested so far, Marmont has placed 8-3-1-1 and now sits on 80 points, with Tye Simmonds on 75 and Daniel McCoy on 72.

With the red plate back on the CDR Rockstar Machine, Team Manager Craig Dack knows that it is no good unless it is on his YZ450F after the final round in Brisbane next week.

“It was nice to make up the points today and get the championship lead but the priority is to have it once the championship is over. That being the case, as team we will continue to go through our regular weekly routine on the bikes and use the talents and skills we have in this team which got us into this position in the first place.”

“I must also mention the determination of Jay. Things didn’t all go his way today but he continued to show the fight that has made him a champion and to still finish second for the round is testament to his character.”

The fifth and final round of the Super X championship takes place at Ipswich, west of Brisbane next weekend. Marmont will be out to secure the one championship in Australian motocross that has eluded him so far.
