 | Another impressive outing from Craig Coxhell and the privateer CJC Racing team showed their continued improvement with the awesome new BMW S 1000 RR, claiming the team’s best qualifying result so far this year of 5th, while finishing top Superstock bike and 6th outright for the weekend. In what the team hopes is a sign of things to come, Craig had the Southbank Motorcycles supported machine out in front in the early stages of race 2 before succumbing to rear tyre problems and dropping back down the field.
The round started with a wet day on Friday and with the forecast showing dry weather for the remainder of the weekend the team opted to maximise their limited budget and sat out the early wet practise sessions hoping for some dry time later in the day. The dry weather didn’t arrive, so a shakedown to test some bike changes and wet setup in the final session of the day ensured things were running smoothly. Saturday’s qualifying saw a dry track and the team put in some good work early in Q1 and another late push in Q2 to solidify their position inside the outright top 8 and set for the Superpole shootout. The former Australian champ then put in an excellent lap to qualify 5th outright at the front of row two.
In race one Craig got off the line well and was up amongst the front runners before being pushed wide in two consecutive corners and dropping as far back 14th, where he showed great determination to fight his way back up to a well deserved 6th outright much to the delight of the good number of BMW supporters in the crowd. Past half race distance he was able to find some clear track and show more of the bikes potential, putting in lap times within half a second of the factory bikes. For race two Craig was joined on the grid by the Monster energy drink girls and accordingly put in a monster start, hole-shotting off the line to take the lead! Things were looking set for CJC to take it to the championship front-runners until Craig was hamstrung by a serious rear chatter problem that kept forcing the bike to run wide.
Craig Coxhell: “We’re continuing to make improvements all the time and the gap is closing between us and the front runners and we’re really pleased with how far we’ve come in only 3 outings. The BMW S 1000 RR’s working really well, I’m getting more and more comfortable on it now and we’re starting to understand it a lot better. Radar and the team did another great job again this weekend and I can’t thank them and our supporters enough. We met a lot of terrific BMW people up here this weekend and I hope we gave them plenty to cheer about!
I had two great starts today, the second being almost the perfect launch and I was in the position I wanted to be to fight up the front, but even from the first lap I was having issues with the rear tyre and couldn’t match the pace we had in the first race. It was a frustrating way to end the weekend to be honest, as we genuinely had the pace to finish inside the top 5 and we all want to put on the best show we can for Southbank Motorcycles and Bisley and the rest of our sponsors. I’m not sure if I spun the tyre on the wheel with that launch or not, but the racing gods had a giggle at my expense in race two today. That’s racing - a couple of the other guys out there had similar issues over the weekend – we’ll be back out there at Phillip Island and I’m determined to get our first top 5.”
Rob Coxhell:
“Another great weekend for CJC on the BMW. Race two could have seen our first top 5 result but the cards didn’t fall our way there. They will soon – its coming. Everyone in the team did another great job this weekend, and I think the paddock as a whole has stepped up a notch and have put on a great show for the fans this weekend. Great racing, motards, freestyle motocross, stunt riders, merchandise and display stands, corporate hospitality – it was a great atmosphere up here and we had a lot of interest in the BMW over the weekend. I want to again thank all of our team sponsors and supporters. Dave and the Ankermann boys worked really well again this weekend, it’s a pleasure to have them involved and everything ran smoothly in the pits as per usual. From here we move a bit closer to home and we’re looking forward to getting back to Phillip Island where we took our first team win last year.”
