Round 4 of the Red Baron FX Nationals and YMF Loan Australian FX Superbike Championship held at Winton Raceway, VIC. September 2011

Both Richard and Darren were optimistic for a great result, as Winton has been a successful hunting ground for both riders in the past. Richard Liminton #3 1198S Ducati leading the series points in the FX Nationals and a close second in the YMF Loans Pro Thunder F1 Championships with Darren Lewis #4 Ducati 848 having missed a round was still second in both Pro Thinder F2 Championships.

Winton was always going to be a challenge with Richard having to rebuild the 1198 after machine failure at Eastern Creek and Darren finding the race trailer with brake problems on the 11th hour having to borrow a friend’s trailer to get on the highway.

We arrived at the track late afternoon and set up the pit ready for Friday practice with both riders finding a pretty good base set up throughout the day.

Race 1 of the RED BARON FX NATIONALS for Pro Thunder and Richard was up with the lead riders in F1 and Darren playing catch up from a bad start on the 848. Both Carbon Imports team members fought hard in the first race with Richard starting the weekend off with a 1st place in F1 and Darren limping home 4th in F2. Upon further examination the 848 was terminal with an expired gearbox, game over for Darren and the 848L

With Darren out for the rest of the day it was up to Richard to fly the team flag and he did with 2 firsts and a second in Formula 1 to take out the day.

Outright spoils went to Phil Lovett on the KTM 990 Naked with Brad Glennan and Simon Galloway.

Richard ended Saturday with 1st in F1 and maintaining his Championship lead. Darren limped home on the 848 to hold his place 2nd in the F2 series behind Mick Johnson’s 848. Adrian Pierpoint won the F2 day on his 848 and jumped to 4th in the Championship.

Sunday race day is the main event showcasing the YMF LOAN AUSTRALIAN FX-SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP and our Pro Thunder series.

Darren parked his bike for the weekend and it looked like the Championship was over but the overwhelming generosity of fellow F2 competitor Duncan Gordan from South Australia handed Darren his new AEP Racing Ducat 848 EVO for Sundays events. The bike is in its embryo stage of development but showed great potential on Saturday with Duncan bagging 3rd in F2. So we swapped fairings and made some adjustments and Darren was back in the hunt.

Richard re packed his clutch and was ready to pull the pin on the 1198S hoping to maintain his lead in the F1 Championship.

Qualifying for Sundays saw all Pro Thunder competitors scrabbling for wet tyres and mother nature didn’t let up so out we went on wets with Richard grabbing a 2nd row start and Darren tip toeing around on Duncan’s bike to get a start on the 4th row. As per usual races are a progressive grid so you can work your way to the front with a good start and a high finish.

Race one saw Richard fight it out with Alumalites John Williams for 2nd in F1 with Nathan Mahboub taking the top spot in class. Darren worked his way to 8th outright and 2nd in F2 for the first outing on the AEP Racing 848. Mick Johnson took out F2.

Race 2 was on as both Richard and Darren moved up the grid from race ones results. A close race at the front and then even closer for 3rd to 7th. Darren getting used to the new bike and was reeling in the F1 bikes posting quicker times than the 3 in front but the race was red flagged with 2 laps to go and a count back saw Richard 3rd in F1 and Darren taking a 1st place in F2.

Lachie Thomas and Simon Galloway stormed away to take outright spoils respectively.

The last race of the day and both team members were keen to get to the front and right from the start Darren and Richard were right up at the front of the pack heading in to the first lap when in turn 6 Darren tried to nip up the inside to set up a pass only to lose the front in spectacular fashion. Richard took evasive action and just missed the pile up with Darren taking Lachie and Nathan with him into the kitty litter. A simple mistake that caused a re-start and ending Darren’s day.

Richard made it back to the restart to do battle and finish 2nd in F1 with a very consistent weekend and a great points haul to consolidate his lead in the Championship. A great result and with only 2 rounds remaining he has a real opportunity to win it this year.

A very trying weekend where we never really got to the lap times that we have achieved at Winton previous. The team would like to extend our thoughts out to Angus and Craig who were injured early on in the weekend. No doubt the results would have been different if they were competing.

Many thanks to Duncan Gordan and AEP Racing for the support over the weekend.

The team heads to Wakefield Park in early October to battle it out again.
